Other Committee · Meeting of October 16, 2026
Concord's 229 Main Street Oversight Committee heard that soil just outside the fenced Superfund site showed depleted uranium as high as 55 milligrams per kilogram, well above the site's 2.7 milligram-per-kilogram cleanup level. Site project representative Kara and community involvement coordinator Liz McCarthy told the panel the finding, made in late July near the walking trail, will trigger an excavation of roughly 2,200 square feet starting in early November, closing the trail during active work. Committee member Pam pressed for exact sample counts, with Kara confirming seven validated off-site lab samples ranging from 1.5 to 55 milligrams per kilogram.
"Sample results came back. Both of them were elevated above the cleanup levels," Kara said. A public commenter separately raised unresolved concerns about Concord's potential liability if the town eventually takes title to the cleaned-up property, an issue officials said remains under discussion with EPA counsel.
