Historical panel clears way for 3 teardowns

Concord's Historical Commission unanimously cleared three houses for demolition, finding none "preferably preserved." Members Nancy, Lauren, Rob Monroe, Marybeth Kelly, Carol Aaronson and Doug Ellis reviewed 143 Everett Street, 845 Barretts Mill Road and 131 Martin Road, hearing that a 41-year Everett Street neighbor's home is appraised at $175,000 against $3 million to $3.5 million rebuilds nearby. Designer Natalie Appleton described the Barretts Mill Road house as barely standing, saying "the whole house, you could drop a marble on the floor and watch it go to the middle." Homeowner Nat Carr said Martin Road renovation bids made a teardown cheaper than fixing the original 1950s systems. Rob Monroe, who moved two of the three motions, joked, "You guys are making me the bad guy tonight." All three votes carried unanimously, each conditioned on pre-demolition photographic documentation.
