CONCORD -- April 15, 2026, Concord School Committee accepts $50,000 trail gift and hears of $750,000 campus cost overrun. The committee voted unanimously April 15 to accept a $50,000 PTG sustainability fund donation to launch the design phase of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail on school property, with construction estimated to cost $400,000 to $500,000 and a Community Preservation Committee application targeted for September. Director of Facilities Bob Themelis disclosed that a second-phase Thoreau campus project, including a nature space, parking lot, and basketball court, came in at $1.6 million against an $850,000 estimate, forcing the district to rebid in pieces and strip features including $200,000 in hydro-seeding. The committee also approved a PTG-funded carved wooden "Lucy Lane" sign on the path behind Willard Elementary to honor retiring Principal Matt Lucy, and voted to approve quarterly budget transfers reflecting a Circuit Breaker special education reimbursement shortfall of roughly $90,000. Three residents urged formation of a technology advisory committee during public comment, including Beth Neitzel, a former senior DHS counselor who warned that online child sexual exploitation threats have grown "truly exponentially" and called the risk "far, far greater than people realize."
