CONCORD --

HIGH SCHOOL Concord-Carlisle's volleyball team won its "Dig for Cancer" game, student representatives told the School Committee on Oct. 7. The match was described as the only fall-sports fundraising event that was not canceled or rescheduled because of weather, since it was played indoors, and organizers reported strong attendance.

COMMUNITY At the Oct. 7 Concord-Carlisle Regional School Committee meeting, district staff member Ryan Palmer described how three current and former CCHS students, Declan Daly, Will, and Cam Daly, along with another student, Brendan, helped save the life of a 69-year-old man who collapsed during an adult beginner's hockey league game at Valley Sports Arena this past summer. Declan and Cam performed CPR while Will retrieved an AED, and the group used it to restart the man's heart. The man underwent open-heart surgery and, as of last week, was walking more than a mile a day, according to Palmer. Cam Daly, now 21 and a Marine, led the response; Declan is a current CCHS senior and Will a junior.

TOWN The Community Preservation Committee heard a funding request Oct. 6 for a revitalization of the playground at Alcott Elementary School, which is used by the Concord Recreation Department for after-school and summer programming. Principal Naomi and project contractor Joe presented a design centered on two climbing towers, additional swings including a basket swing, and rubberized surfacing intended to improve accessibility for students with mobility challenges. The project carries letters of support from Concord Recreation and the town's Council on Disabilities. Presenters said the request is for roughly half a million dollars from the CPC, with the project team working to raise additional funds separately.
